Course overview

This course has been developed to support staff who are working in a wide range of settings, including general mental health services. However this programme will be particularly relevant to practitioners working with individuals detained under mental health legislation, in forensic mental health services, assertive outreach or criminal justice system. It will also provide learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be able to work with individuals with mental health problems to change behaviour which has a negative impact on themselves or others. The focus is on helping the individual recognise the impact of their behaviour and develop alternative coping strategies. 
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Group discussions, small group activities, case studies, scenario based activities, DVD clip and learner action plans.

Discuss the legal, service and social context of working with individuals in relation to their behaviour
Gathering and using relevant information to explore behavioural responses
Working with an individual to plan a strategy for changing patterns of behaviour that have a negative impact
Working with an individual and significant others to review a strategy for changing patterns of behaviour that have a negative impact

Learning outcomes
