Course overview

This course has been developed for learners to gain the knowledge and practical competences required to deal with the range of emergency first aid situations. Learners will be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt and effective first aid in emergency situations. They will gain an insight as to how they will support the qualified first aider including stocking of equipment and record keeping. This course will also provide the learners with knowledge of AED functions and an understanding of the use of a defibrillator.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
AED equipment, manikins, first aid kit, scenarios, group discussions, small group activities and self-assessment.

Course content

First aid legislation
When and how to call for help
First aid equipment
How to complete an incident report form
Control of bleeding and how to control severe external bleeding
How to minimise the risk of infection
Primary survey
Heart attack
Choking and how to treat a casualty who is choking
AED functions
Use of the defibrillator
CPR
The recovery position

Learning outcomes

State the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
Demonstrate how to assess an incident
Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
Explain how to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
Manage a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
Identify and complete the correct documentation
Demonstrate the use of the AED functions and use of the defibrillator
