Effective Management of Risk in Mental Health Settings for Managers and Team Leaders

Course overview

This course has been developed for Managers and Team Leaders within mental health supported housing settings. The course will look at how to support teams to improve the way that risk assessments are drawn up and managed, as well as to improve the way that serious incidents are managed and recorded using the newly introduced recording form. The course will also explore how managers and team leaders can support their teams to increase their confidence in using a person centred approach to support customers to manage risk in their lives. Managers and team leaders will be given an overview of the Person Centred Planning tools available and develop an understanding of how they can support their teams to develop a pro-active approach to supporting individuals with monitoring and maintaining their mental health.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Case studies, group discussions, small group activities, risk assessments and serious incident forms

Course content

Supporting staff to gain an understanding of organisational structures
The worker’s role in updating support plans and risk assessments
Encouraging staff to involve customers and share information with other professionals in a timely manner
Supporting staff to raise safeguarding concerns using local policies and procedures
Provision of and guidance to use person centred planning tools and techniques
Providing support for staff to understand and recognise potential relapse indicators and recognise deterioration in individuals' mental health
Encouraging staff to support customer self - management techniques
Supporting staff when they escalate an issue
Provision of up to date information on advocacy services
Constructive feedback following the completion of risk assessments and the new Serious Incident Forms
Supporting staff to self - reflect following a serious incident
