Course overview

This course has been developed to raise awareness at the issues of dual diagnosis and what this means for individuals in the care system. Participants will examine underlying reasons, that underpin these issues as well as current research and advice to carers.

The exercises and case studies used within this session will give each course participant a clear understanding of the many issues that underpin the problems encountered by service users and their families; how best to cope with these when they occur; and how to effectively communicate with agencies to manage these issues.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
A variety of condition fact sheets for research activities, case studies, group discussions, small group activities and DVD clips.

The difference between a mental health problem and a learning disability
Barriers to accessing the right support
Methods of support for an individual who is experiencing mental ill health and a learning disability

Learning outcomes

Gain an overview of the issues surrounding a Dual Diagnosis
Describe what tools can be used to assist in effective communication with agencies involved in the mental health of people with dual diagnosis
List effective intervention tools and models to support service users
Develop processes for service users and their carers with regard to enhancing better outcomes and positive change
