Enabling Behaviour Change (Motivational Interviewing)

Course overview

This course has been developed for a range of social care practitioners whose role involves them offering direct support to those who find change difficult to achieve. This includes many roles such as care workers, foster workers and social workers.
The course offers an opportunity for attendees to reflect on their role in facilitating self-reflection for individuals allowing for person centered target setting and improving positive outcomes. Attendees will be introduced to person centered working via a Social Pedagogic approach and utilising Critical Reflection in order to maximise effective outcomes.
Learning about Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Therapy empowers staff to offer the best possible support for individuals. Key areas of focus include The Four Interaction Skills, The Spirit of Motivational Interviewing and The Four Processes of Motivational Interviewing. Solution Focused approach work helps an individual set their own positive targets and research demonstrates the true effectiveness of such an approach. The art of active listening and empowerment are skills which require constant reflection and practice and are the bedrock of best practice.

Throughout this course professional codes, regulating conduct, legislation and systemic practice is embedded, with research and evidence based outcomes critical to learning outcomes.

Group discussions to share effective practice experiences, small group activities, and case studies.

Creating an effective relationship
Recognising and applying a person centred approach
Critical Reflection and effective listening
Introduction to the interaction skills, the spirit, and the process of Motivational Interviewing
Solution Focused work in effecting change
Person Centred intervention planning in way which motivates an individual to make positive change
Providing clear measurable target setting and evidenced based practice
Understanding the concept of ‘risk’ and Defensible Practice

Learning outcomes

  • Describe how to create a person centered environment
  • Give an example of how to apply a person centred approach
  • Understand the concept of Critical Reflection and how this is utilised to improve outcomes
  • List the key components of what is involved in Motivational Interviewing
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the art of Active Listening and put some of these skills into practice
  • Show a good understanding of effective planning for change through the use of Solution Focused Therapy
  • State how person centred planning should be recorded in order to both evidence change and motivate individuals
  • Explain your role as a facilitator for change and show a clear understanding of the role an individual will play as the lead target setter
  • Describe how change is measured, evaluated and built upon
