Course overview

This 2 day course has been developed for learners who are taking on the role and responsibility of the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO). Learners will develop skills and confidence in carrying out their role, gain an understanding of the safeguarding process in more detail and know the responsibility they play in ensuring children and adults are safeguarded. Learners will explore protection procedure within their organisation and learn how to ensure that all staff members understand their responsibilities towards safeguarding children and adults. 
The course will support the development of professional thinking, the connection to the theoretical framework and most importantly how to enact policy and procedures with real people. A great emphasis will be placed on adopting a meaningful understanding of safeguarding in which the philosophy of the legislation and guidance is brought to life and each Designated Safeguarding Officer locates them self within their role, both as an individual and for the entire organisation.     
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Scenarios, case studies, group discussions and small group activities.

The role of the designated safeguarding officer
Own values regarding abuse and maltreatment
Key legislation
Steps that need to be taken to ensure safety
Blocks that inhibit the disclosure of abuse
Respond effectively to a disclosure adult or child
Blocks that staff may have to report concerns
Decision making about actions to take
Referral process
Recording and sharing information
Networks for personal support
Organisation policy and procedures

Learning outcomes

Describe the role of the designated safeguarding officer and state key area of responsibility 
State their own values regarding abuse and maltreatment and the impact of these on professional practice
Describe the key legislation and guidance underpinning the organisational policy for responding to safeguarding concerns 
State what steps the organisation needs to take to ensure the safety and welfare of those with whom it has contact 
State what blocks inhibit the disclosure of abuse, and respond effectively to an adult, child or young person who does disclose 
Explain how to respond to a disclosure effectively and in a timely manner
State the blocks to staff reporting concerns, and how to overcome these 
Explain how to make appropriate decisions about the action to make when informed of concerns, including those regarding staff or volunteers
State what is  likely to happen following a referral to the relevant investigating agencies and what further role they may have 
Explain the issues in connection with recording and sharing of information, including that of confidentiality 
Explain the emotional dimensions of safeguarding work and identify a network for personal support 
State the main tenets of own organisational policy and procedures
