Dementia Awareness Professional Trainer Programme

Course overview

This programme has been developed for staff who have a responsibility for training others in dementia awareness within their workplace. It is designed to support organisations with an in-house training provision as well as those working as independent trainers.

Having a qualified dementia trainer within an organisation will support the ongoing training needs across the business as well as continuous improvements in practice. Trainers will be able to deliver sessions to groups of staff as well as work one-to-one with individuals where their practice may need developing.

Having a quality internal training provision, can support organisations to access the training they need more quickly, at a time that is right for them and in a more cost efficient way than accessing an external provider.

Within this programme, learners will develop the skills required to understand dementia care training demands across your business, to ensure that your trainers are embedding this within their delivery. The health and care needs of the individuals you support frequently change, and therefore as a business you need to ensure that the skills of your staff teams are kept up to date with these changes.

It is therefore essential that your dementia trainers truly understand the importance of using a whole range of delivery methods, including real case studies from within your own organisation. This will ensure that practice is developed not only in line with occupational standards, but also considering the specific needs of all individuals your staff support, which will lead to improved well-being and quality of life.

An in-house trainer will also be available to support families, friends and unpaid carers to ensure they are offered necessary advice and training on how to work with individuals and effectively communicate with them.


This course has been developed and mapped to:

  • The National Dementia Strategy
  • Dementia Core Skills Education and Training Framework
  • The Care Certificate – Standard 9 Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities
  • The 6c’s
  • VAK Learning Styles Self-Assessment Questionnaire

 

and the following QCF units and qualifications:

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training
  • Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia


PROGRAMME DURATION
There are two programme options available:

  • The 4 day programme is aimed at those who do not hold a current, up to date teaching qualification
    This programme includes the Level 3 Award in Education and Training as well as an accredited Dementia unit. This will provide learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, deliver, and evaluate teaching and learning sessions for dementia awareness, in a variety of teaching or training contexts
  • The 2 day programme is aimed at those already qualified to teach and can demonstrate that they have delivered training sessions in other subjects in the last 12 months.

This programme includes an accredited dementia unit.


PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS
To attend this programme, learners will require experience of working with individuals with dementia and a passion for developing the skills and practice of others. A pre programme registration form will need to be completed.

This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:

  • Scenario based activities
  • DVD clip
  • Learner action plans.

  • Give an example of ways to promote equality and value diversity
  • Describe why it is important to identify and meet individual learner needs
  • List ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Describe why it is important to promote appropriate behaviour and respect for others
  • Explain how the teaching role involves working with other professionals
  • State the boundaries between the teaching role and other professional roles
  • Describe points of referral to meet the individual needs of learners
  • Describe how the Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia will be mapped throughout this programme
