Course overview

This course has been developed to provide learners with the knowledge required to achieve a Level 3 Dementia Awareness Award. The course enhances knowledge around the care and support of individuals with dementia. It looks at person centered approaches, factors that can influence communication, the impact that diversity, equality and inclusion can have on the individual’s experience of dementia and the administration of medication.
Learners will be required to complete assignments for each unit to gain this accredited award.
In addition to attending this training session, learners may need to undertake some further research within their own organisation to support them with producing the information required to complete their assignments.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Dementia fact sheets for research activity, group discussions, small group activities and DVD clips.

Describe the neurology of dementia
State the impact of recognition and diagnosis of dementia 
Describe how dementia care must be underpinned by a person centred approach
List common medications available to, and appropriate for, individuals with dementia
Explain how to provide person centered care to individuals with dementia through the appropriate 
List how individuals with dementia may communicate in different ways
Describe the importance of positive interactions with individuals with dementia
Describe the factors which can affect interactions and communication of individuals with dementia
Explain the concept of diversity and its relevance to working with individuals who have dementia
State how each individuals experience of dementia is unique
Explain the importance of working in a person-centred way and how this links to inclusion
