Course overview

This course has been developed for staff who are involved in catheter care. Learners will look at the protocols and good practice in relation to catheterisation, and explore and discuss the points of regular monitoring and care of the catheter.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Personal care items, catheters, group discussions, small group activities, DVD clips and assessment tools.

Legislation, national guidelines and local policies and practices
The anatomy and physiology of the male and female genito-urinary system
Ethical issues surrounding catheterisation
What is a urinary catheter and why would it be used?
Types of catheters that can be used
Gaining valid consent
Monitoring catheterisation equipment
Emptying draining bags
Measuring and recording the urine output
Catheter associated Urinary Tract Infection
Signs from urine and urinalysis
Maintaining the cleanliness
Apply standard precautions for infection control
Taking action when problems arise
Maintaining privacy and dignity

Learning outcomes

State relevant legislation, policy and good practice in relation to carrying out urethral catheterisation
Describe the relevant anatomy and physiology
Monitor and care for the urethral catheter after insertion
Demonstrate how to care for and support the individual during and after the procedure
