This course has been developed for practitioners and professionals who work with children and young people, to enable them to examine: how the toxic trio of parental substance misuse, parental mental illness and domestic abuse coexist within families; the impact these have on children; how to take the necessary action within their professional duty and role to ensure the child or young person is safe.

This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Scenarios, case studies, group discussions and small group activities.

Learning outcomes

Identify how the risk factors of parental mental illness, substance misuse and domestic abuse coexist within families and the implications for child protection in children and young people
Identify, analyse and assess harm through understanding how the cumulative issues impact on children and young people in relation to immediate risk and long term harm
Describe the blocks for practitioners that impact on effective outcomes for children and families and how to overcome them, including the challenge of integrating children and adult services to maintain the focus on the child
Identify best practice to achieve positive outcomes for complex families
Develop skills in how to use a research base to assess change with a focus on each child’s needs and experiences, and how to apply research base findings to their practice; and be able to recognise and challenge disguised compliance
