Course overview

This course has been developed to provide both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable nurses, carers and support workers to safely and proficiently provide stoma and bowel care and support to an individual who has a stoma. Learners will have the opportunity to try out practical skills relating to fitting, emptying and removing and re-applying stoma products.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Case studies, group discussions, small group activities and quizzes
This course has been developed and mapped to:
The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures.
And the following QCF unit:
Supporting Infection Prevention and Control in Social Care

Course content

What is a stoma?
Overview of the digestive system
Reasons for a stoma
Effective communication
Management and care of a patient with a colostomy or ileostomy
The Urinary System: Urostomy
Self - care and management (skin care and changing a stoma bag)
Living with a stoma
Dietary management and care of the individual with constipation
Practical workshop & changing a colostomy and ileostomy bag

Learning outcomes

Outline the reasons for a stoma
Identify the different types of stoma, why they are formed and their normal function
Recognise stoma abnormalities
Discuss the importance of effective communication in stoma care, including cultural and religious considerations
Describe the role of the health care professional in caring for patients with a stoma
Describe the self-care and support a patient will need to become independent with stoma care
Give an overview of the general dietary requirements for the 3 types of stoma
Describe the products used in stoma care
