Managing Bowel Care

Course overview

This course has been developed to provide staff with the knowledge required in order for them to assess, plan and deliver appropriate bowel care for residents.  The session will cover evidence-based practice in this area and will enable staff to improve the quality of life for residents with constipation and other bowel related problems.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Case studies, puzzles and crosswords, group discussions and worksheets 
This course has been developed and mapped to:
Royal College of Nursing Guidance on Management of Lower Bowel Dysfunction, including DRE and DRF (2012).

Course content

Anatomy and physiology of the lower gastro intestinal tract
Definition and causes of bowel dysfunction
Assessment of bowel function and constipation
The importance of nutrition and hydration for improvement and maintenance of bowel functioning
Skin care, containment and effective bowel evacuation
Rehabilitation techniques
Medication and treatment for bowel function
Emergencies and complications of the lower bowel
Consent, privacy, dignity and communication
Current evidence-based practice
Health care assistants: Developing competence in lower bowel care 

Learning outcomes

Describe the anatomy and physiology associated of the bowel
Discuss constipation and the causes of bowel dysfunction
Identify the requirements for assessing bowel function
State the importance of nutrition and hydration for bowel function
Recall care of the skin, principles of containment and evacuation
Describe rehabilitation techniques
