Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia Qualification Overview

Course overview

The Level 3 Award in Awareness of Dementia assesses candidates’ knowledge and understanding of practices in the care of individuals with dementia. It deals with issues such as person-centered approaches, factors that can influence communication, the impact that diversity, equality and inclusion can have on the individual’s experience of dementia and the administration of medication. 
It is aimed at those already working in a care environment or those that are preparing to work in a care environment, who wish to gain knowledge and understanding of caring for individuals with dementia. The qualification can also be used as professional development to gain an understanding of this specialist area of practice. 
The knowledge gained through the achievement of these qualifications can be used towards the achievement of the certificates in dementia care as well as the diploma in health and social care

Understand the process and experience of dementia
Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach
Understand the role of communication and interactions with individuals who have dementia
Understand the diversity of individuals with dementia and the importance of inclusion

Learning outcomes

Understand the neurology of dementia
Understand the impact of recognition and diagnosis of dementia
Understand how dementia care must be underpinned by a person centred approach
Understand the common medications available to, and appropriate for, individuals with dementia
Understand how to provide person centered care to individuals with dementia through the appropriate and effective use of medication
Understand that individuals with dementia  may communicate in different ways
Understand the importance of positive interactions with individuals with dementia
Understand the factors which can affect interactions and communication of individuals with dementia
Understand the concept of diversity and its relevance to working with individuals who have dementia
Understand that each individuals experience of dementia is unique
Understand the importance of working in a person centred way and how this links to inclusion


Assessment Criteria
Learners will be required to complete a workbook to evidence their knowledge for each unit.

The workbooks will be assessed by a member of the Unique Training Solutions team and will go through the UTS quality assurance process.

All of the assessment criteria must be met for all of the units to achieve the full qualification.
