Course overview

This course has been developed to explore the meaning of what is a learning disability and considers issues closely linked with learning disability support. It will explore working in a person centred way to empower individuals to make choices about the care and support that they receive. The course will explore working with families and multi-agency approaches which help to maximise the individual’s community presence and involvement.  
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Learning Disability fact sheets for research activity, group discussions, small group activities and DVD clips.

The terms profound, severe, moderate and mild learning disability & what do these mean?
Legislation, standards, policies and procedures
What has changed within the sector?
What principles underpin care and support?
Looking beyond the disability to person centered planning
Effective communication and confidentiality
Working in Service Users own home
Minimising abusive situations
Reviewing current practice

Learning outcomes

State the nature and characteristics of a variety of learning disabilities
Describe the historical context of learning disability
Explain how views and attitudes impact on the lives of individuals with learning disabilities and their family carers
