Moving and Positioning Individuals and Back Care Refresher

Course overview

This course has been developed for staff who have previously attended a full Moving & Positioning Individuals and Back Care course. It updates them on any changes that have occurred to the ‘Guide to Handling of Patients 6th edition’ and requirements of Health & Safety legislation. As a refresher course, this training requires staff to take part in group work demonstrating their current knowledge and practice, and supports them to adapt their current practice within the specialism of their roles. The focus is on supporting learners to update their knowledge and practice through group work delivery.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Role play, group discussions, small group activities, slide sheets, handling belts, turntable and hoist.
This course has been developed and mapped to:
The Care Certificate Standard 13
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
And the following QCF units:
Move and Position Individuals in Accordance with their Plan of Care
Promote and Implement Health and Safety in Health and Social Care

An overview of: Back Facts, spinal anatomy, general health and posture and physiology
Safe principals of moving and positioning
Maximising Service Users’ own ability
Moving and positioning techniques – Including use of aids
Warnings against unsafe and outdated moves
Improved techniques and principles

Learning outcomes

Describe key safe principles for moving and positioning
Give a basic overview of spinal anatomy and physiology
State what is meant by the term moving and positioning
Give an example of how to support a service user to maximize their own abilities
List unsafe and outdated moves
Demonstrate safe moving and positioning - Including use of aids
