Motivational Interviewing

Subject categories: General Health and Social Care, Housing

Course overview

This course has been developed to give learners an awareness of what Motivational Interviewing is and how to use it effectively. Motivational Interviewing is a directive, person-centred counselling style which has been designed to explore and resolve ambivalence to change. This is not a technique of direct persuasion as persuasion is seen as an external force that does not lead to permanent changes in peoples’ behaviour.
This course supports individuals to clarify their understanding and to develop a model of motivational interviewing that supports their specific context.
Motivational interviewing is being increasingly used in the areas of health promotion, public health and primary care to support lifestyle/behaviour change. When first developed two decades ago, it was used mainly in the fields of addiction and substance misuse.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Group discussion and team feedback, individual written activities, practical activities using scenarios, PowerPoint and an end of course assessment.
This course has been developed and mapped to:
NICE Guidelines on Motivational Interviewing
