Course overview

This course has been developed to provide staff with the knowledge required in order for them to administer and/ or assist with the administration of medication. Organisational in-house competence based training should also be undertaken following this course. 
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Medication administration props, BNF directory for research, group discussions, small group activities and individual assessments.
This course has been developed and mapped to:
NICE Guidelines: Managing Medicines in Care Homes 
The KSF Health and wellbeing (HWB) 5: Provision of Care to Meet Health and Well Being Needs
And the following QCF units:
Administer Medication to Individuals, and Monitor the Effects 
Support use of Medication in Health and Social Care Settings

Legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
Roles and responsibilities in supporting the use of medication
The terms trade and generic and categories of medicines
Ordering, receiving, storage and disposing of medicines
Administration and monitoring an individual’s medication
Frequency of medication and routes of administration
Signs to look out for with an adverse reaction to medication
When medication is refused
Self-administration by Service Users
When things go wrong
Record keeping 

Learning outcomes

State legislation, policy and procedures relevant to administration of medication
Describe their own role and responsibilities in the use of medication 
State procedures and techniques for the administration of medication
List steps required for preparation for the administration of medication
State how to administer and monitor individual’s medication
Explain the importance of record keeping in relation to medication 
Describe how to promote the rights of the individual when managing medication
