Course overview

This course has been developed for learners to gain the knowledge and practical competences required to deal with the range of emergency first aid situations at home. Learners will be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt and effective first aid in emergency situations. They will gain an understanding of the importance of the stocking of equipment and record keeping.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
First Aid manikins, First Aid kit, scenarios, group discussions, small group activities and DVD clips.
This course has been developed and mapped to:
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 (as amended)
Resuscitation Council Guidelines
And the following QCF unit:
Emergency First Aid Skills

Course content

First aid legislation
When and how to call for help
First aid equipment
How to complete an incident report form
Control of bleeding and how to control severe external bleeding
How to minimise the risk of infection
Choking and how to treat a casualty who is choking
The recovery position
Hypo/Hyper (diabetes)

Learning outcomes

  • State the role and responsibilities of the first aider
  • Demonstrate how to assess an incident
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Describe how to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Manage a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Identify and complete the correct documentation
  • Manage a casualty who is having an epistaxis
  • Manage a casualty who is going into hypo/hyper
  • Manage a casualty how is having an epileptic seizure
  • Manage a casualty who has a fracture
  • Manage a casualty who has been burned
  • Manage a casualty how has been electrocuted
