Course overview

This course has been developed to support people who are involved in the lives of children and adults who may need to use alternative communication methods in order to meet the communication needs of an individual they are supporting.
Many people with learning disabilities and difficulties, autism or other disability that may affect verbal communication, may have been taught Makaton from an early age. If staff are able to communicate using Makaton then this will enable the individuals they are supporting to use their preferred methods of communication.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Case studies, group discussions, small group activities, workbooks and picture cards.

Introduction to Makaton symbols

Learning outcomes

State what the Makaton Language Programme is
Explain the link between Makaton and BSL
Give an example of how the symbols can be used
Describe how Makaton can support the needs of people with learning and communication difficulties
Demonstrate single signs made from stages 1 and 2 of the core vocabulary
